Indiana Pacers' Frugality Could Bite Them Again With Massive Front Office Move

The Indiana Pacers, since 2006, have been one of the most frugal teams in the NBA, not paying the luxury tax even once. As a result, free agents rarely flock to Indiana, and even homegrown talents like Myles Turner eventually leave for greener pastures.

Kevin Pritchard has been president of basketball operations in Indiana for the last eight seasons, and has been able to build talented roster after talented roster, even with minimal resources. However, his patience with the frugal ownership is likely growing thin, and he has been named as a possible replacement to lead a rival team.

After firing longtime executive Masai Ujiri, the Toronto Raptors are looking for a proven replacement.

“An interesting name to watch is Kevin Pritchard, the long-time Indiana Pacers president who led the club to the NBA Finals this past June and the Eastern Conference Finals in 2024,” wrote SportsNet’sMichael Grange. “One league insider suggested to me that the Pacers executive is MLSE’s preferred choice, although lateral moves when executives are under contract with other teams are often harder to execute than when there is a promotion.”

The Raptors have only ever paid the luxury tax once since 2006, although it resulted in their lone title in 2019. The team is not adverse to spending, as they were linked to expensive players like Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo earlier this season.

While poaching Pritchard won’t be easy, if the Raptors offer him more freedom and resources than he gets in Indiana, it shouldn’t be shocking if he jumps ship.
