Indiana Fever Share Kelsey Mitchell Post in Caitlin Clark’s Absence originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Indiana Fever are still without the services of Caitlin Clark, who continues to nurse a strained groin that kept her out of this past weekend’s WNBA All-Star Game. Sans Clark, they headed to the borough of Brooklyn on Tuesday to take on the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty.
Indiana fell apart in the fourth quarter and got outscored 29-17 during the recent game, which resulted in a 98-84 loss. It had gotten blown out by New York last Wednesday as well by 21 points.
Despite the loss, guard Kelsey Mitchell left no doubt regarding her mettle during high-voltage matchups and Fever made sure to announce the same to the world. After Mitchell exploded for 29 points against Liberty, Indiana shared a social media post celebrating her game. During her spectacular play, she made 11 of her 21 field-goal attempts while adding two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Mitchell has been playing brilliant basketball once again this season. She was just selected to appear in the All-Star game for the third year in a row, and she’s averaging 19.1 points a game while shooting 46.5% from the field and 36.6% from 3-point range.
The eight-year veteran has scored at least 20 points in nine of her last 12 games, which has prevented the Fever from dropping into the basement with Clark in and out of the lineup.
The Fever now have a 12-12 record, which is the seventh-best record in the WNBA. They will return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse to face the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday before visiting Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky this Sunday.
Clark reportedly traveled with the team to meet with doctors in the New York City area, but there is no timetable right now for her return. While Indiana fans are likely frustrated about all the games she has missed, her health should be the No. 1 priority as far as the team’s chances of doing some real damage come playoff time.
