Louisville basketball boasted one of the most lethal backcourt duos in the ACC during Year 1 of the Pat Kelsey era in Terrence Edwards Jr. and Chucky Hepburn.
On Thursday night, the former Cardinals will take the court against each other, hoping to make good impressions on a bevy of NBA scouts who will be in attendance.
Edwards and Hepburn are competing in the 71st Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, which brings together 64 of the country’s top seniors who are fringe NBA draft prospects. A strong showing at Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, could lead to an NBA combine invite and/or a roster spot in the G League or in the international ranks.
Edwards is playing for Roger Brown’s Sports Bar & Restaurant, which features Khalif Battle (Gonzaga) and Kadin Shedrick (Texas). Hepburn is representing the Portsmouth Sports Club alongside former Kentucky forward Andrew Carr. Thursday’s 7 p.m. tipoff is both players’ first game in the tournament.
The PIT began Wednesday. Its championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
Edwards finished the 2024-25 season as U of L’s leading scorer, averaging 16.7 points on 43.7% shooting with 4.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists across 32.8 minutes per game. Hepburn, a first-team All-ACC selection and the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year, came in second with 16.4 points on 43.2% shooting to go along with a team-high 5.8 assists and 2.4 steals per contest.
This isn’t the first time Edwards and Hepburn have battled against each other on the court. At their previous schools, James Madison and Wisconsin, they met in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament; Edwards and the Dukes emerged with a 72-61 win over Hepburn and the Badgers.
