Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has had some exciting moments during his four seasons in the NBA ever since he was taken with the 27th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Brooklyn knew that Thomas was going to come in the league with the ability to score the basketball, but it’s worth looking into how good he has been in his first five starts in the NBA.
In a recent chart put out by HoopsHype on X, the outlet put out a list of the top scorers in NBA history in the first five starts of a player’s career. Based on the calculations from HoopsHype, Thomas scored the third-most points in his first five starts, trailing NBA greats like center Wilt Chamberlain and forward Adrian Dantley and ahead of players like center Moses Malone.
When it comes to Thomas and what he did in his first five starts, he averaged 30.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 44.3% from the field and 39.0% from three-point land. Thomas played at least 33 minutes in each game and attempted at least 11 free-throws in three of the five games, showing how ready he was to take advantage of the opportunity.
Thomas, 23, has been one of the better scorers in the NBA over the past two seasons as he has averaged 22.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 44.1% from the floor and 35.9% from deep. More to the point, Thomas is coming off his best season of his NBA career with averages of 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game on .438/.349/.881 shooting splits.
Thomas remains unsigned as one of four notable restricted free-agents that are waiting for their next contract amidst a market that has dried up in terms of money that teams can spend. Assuming that Thomas re-signs with the Nets at some point prior to the beginning of the 2025-26 season, he will most likely be the best scorer on the team, but he could face some competition from forward Michael Porter Jr., who Brooklyn acquired in a trade from the Denver Nuggets earlier this summer.
