The Los Angeles Rams took care of an important piece of business on Saturday when they signed Terrance Ferguson, the 46th overall pick in the draft, to his rookie deal. It took much longer than usual, strictly because second-round picks selected ahead of Ferguson were getting fully guaranteed deals, thus making other guys hold out for the same type of contract.
Ferguson ultimately did not get a fully guaranteed deal like Jayden Higgins, Carson Schwesinger and others, but his contract came with more guaranteed money than last year’s 46th overall pick, Jonathon Brooks.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Ferguson’s total contract value is $9.71 million and $8.05 million of that is guaranteed. That’s about 83% guaranteed. Brooks, who was drafted in the same spot as Ferguson last year, had just $6.24 million of his $8.42 million contract guaranteed, which is about 74%.
So the portion of Ferguson’s contract that’s guaranteed is up about 9% from last year, which isn’t insignificant. Rookie deals are valued based on where a player is drafted, but there’s room for negotiation when it comes to guaranteed money.
The player drafted ahead of Ferguson this year, JT Tuimoloau, had 88.02% of his contract guaranteed, which is also up about 9% from last year’s 45th overall pick.
