The Houston Rockets started their summer league play this week as they were defeated by the Los Angeles Clippers 95-92. The game’s score wasn’t the biggest storyline, as second-year guard Reed Sheppard had a great scoring night.

He scored 28 points while shooting 10‑for‑25 from the field and nailed 6 of 15 deep. He also added eight rebounds, four assists, four steals, and three blocks in 33 minutes of play. With four steals and three blocks, his instincts and active hands were on full display.

“I’ll be able to sit down and watch a film tomorrow. But that’s been a big thing we’ve been working on this offseason. Being more physical on the defensive end,” said Sheppard.

Coach Garrett Jackson and others emphasized Sheppard’s growing physicality and defensive impact, the kind of two-way play coach Ime Udoka demands.

“I’m constantly encouraging him to do that. But just being more assertive, getting us set up in our sets as the point guard of this team,” said Jackson.

If this performance is any indication, Sheppard is ready to take his role to another level in 2025‑26. He should be expected to see more minutes this season, as the Rockets will need his shooting to score more from the outside with the addition of Kevin Durant.
