Jul. 5—The full, 30-team NBA Summer League won’t start until next week, but the California Classic and Salt Lake City Summer League act as sort of an opening act for the main event in Las Vegas. Both start today and run through Tuesday, with four teams participating in San Francisco and four more in Salt Lake City.
Illinois fans might want to keep an eye on the California Classic given the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors are participating.
Former Illini Kasparas Jakucionis and Dain Dainja will team up for the first time (no overlap in Champaign, of course) for the Heat. Jakucionis was selected with the No. 20 overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft, and Dainja signed on for a Summer League opportunity after he both went undrafted and was denied another year of eligibility at Memphis by the NCAA.
Other Big Ten players on the Miami roster include former Indiana big men Kel’el Ware and Oumar Ballo and former Michigan center Vladislav Goldin.
Golden State’s Summer League roster also boasts a former Illini in Coleman Hawkins. He’ll team up with former Maryland forward Donta Scott and a few Big 12 opponents from his single season at Kansas State in Houston teammates LJ Cryer and Ja’Vier Francis and Texas Tech guard Chance McMillian.
