Giants sign 1.42 ERA pitcher after surprise discarding by Tigers

The San Francisco Giants just picked up an exceptionally effective pitcher off the scrap heap.

They signed Matt Gage to a minor-league contract, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

Gage was designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers last week and elected free agency.

He hasn’t allowed a run in 5.2 innings at the MLB level this season. His career MLB ERA is 1.42 in 25.1 innings spread across short stints with the Blue Jays, Astros and Tigers.

Gage doesn’t have quite as good Triple-A stats, which may be why he has never gotten a super long look. He has a 4.64 ERA at the top minor league level.

That doesn’t hold true this season, though.

At Triple-A Toledo, Gage had thrown 32.1 innings with a 1.67 ERA.

The Giants probably don’t need Gage immediately, but neither lefty in their bullpen is a sure thing. Erik Miller has struggled with his control, while Joey Lucchesi is a journeyman who just recently arrived in the majors for San Francisco.

Jump will likely report to Triple-A, but he’ll have a very real chance of putting on a Giants uniform sooner rather than later to see if he can keep his sparkling MLB stats going.
