Giants Making ‘Concerted Effort’ to Fix Russell Wilson Major Problem originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
This would seem like a terribly harsh take on Russell Wilson, who at age 36 has seen it all and done it all and is expected to bring every bit of that wisdom into the huddle to lead the New York Giants.
But given the fact that the take is coming from inside the building?
Yes, maybe “DangerRuss” needs to fix a problem … or the Giants need to fix something with their starting quarterback that is allegedly broken.
The issue? Taking sacks.
According to John Schmeelk of Giants.com, “Last year, Wilson had an 8.9-percent sack rate, which was fifth-highest in the league … Over the past five seasons, Wilson’s 8.7-percent sack rate is tied for eighth-highest.”
“Highest,” obviously, is bad.
Now we don’t know that Wilson would concur that this is a “problem,” though again, in terms of the intellectual side of this sport, he should know far more that most every sportswriter put together.
What do the Giants coaches think?
Per Giants.com, there was at minicamp “a concerted effort with the offense to get the ball out quickly. If the deep pass down the field was not there, Wilson was quickly getting to his checkdown early. (Head coach) Brian Daboll and (coordinator) Mike Kafka know that sacks can short-circuit drives, and they will do everything in their power to help Wilson bring down his sack rate.”
One problem with any “play faster” idea is that it could clash with two of the great strengths of Wilson’s 10-time Pro Bowle career.
One, he is proficient and productive at throwing his trademark “moon ball.” That’s a deep throw, and Malik Nabers is going to love it. But … a deep ball takes time.
And two, Wilson went to Super Bowls with the Seahawks in part due to his ability to extend plays.
Do the Giants want to take that away? Or as a 13-year veteran is it a talent that’s fading?
The best answer would be for the Giants line to be stellar and for Wilson to replicate what he did years ago. But maybe New York’s coaches see those possibilities as less that likely, meaning it’s Russ himself who might need to change.
