Former Yankees Hero David Cone Shares Bold Anthony Volpe Idea Amid Latest Struggles

Former Yankees Hero David Cone Shares Bold Anthony Volpe Idea Amid Latest Struggles originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Between his six seasons pitching in the Bronx and his nearly two decades in the broadcast booth, David Cone knows how passionate and loud New York Yankees fans can get.

Whether they’re on social media or at Yankee Stadium, those same Yankees fans have loudly expressed their frustrations with struggling shortstop Anthony Volpe. Although Volpe is on pace for a career-high in home runs, he leads the majors with 16 errors.

Volpe’s latest error came on Wednesday night, when he short-hopped a throw to first base. However, fans likely forgot about that miscue when Volpe smashed a game-tying, ninth-inning homer off Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks in an eventual 5-4 win.

Either way, Cone wants to see Yankee Stadium rally around the embattled third-year infielder.

“Maybe the Yankees fans should give Volpe a standing ovation, try to get him going,” Cone suggested. “Because he’s your shortstop. … [And] there’s nobody else there right now.”

Cone referenced a viral August 2023 moment when Philadelphia Phillies fans gave All-Star shortstop Trea Turner a standing ovation amid his struggles. Turner subsequently went on a 10-game hitting streak and hit 16 home runs over the season’s final two months.

As Cone more or less pointed out, Yankees fans are stuck with Volpe. There is no reason to believe that the Yankees will move the recently-acquired Amed Rosario into the starting lineup on either an interim or permanent basis.

Volpe entered Thursday batting .217 with 16 home runs, 58 RBIs, 22 doubles, and a career-high .700 OPS. However, his poor defense makes it difficult for fans to enjoy or celebrate Volpe’s improved power stroke.

Unfortunately for Cone, we expect the only time we’ll see Yankee Stadium applaud Volpe is when he does something right. A standing ovation out of love and support for a struggling player isn’t exactly how Yankees fans roll.
