Former Las Vegas Raiders HC Jon Gruden has fired back against the “Pittsburgh Steelers don’t have wide receivers” narrative — pointing to several talented pass catchers on the Black and Gold offense that excite him.
On Friday, Gruden released his AFC North Preview, breaking down the ins and outs of the competitive division — but when it came to Pittsburgh, he blasted the criticism surrounding a supposed lack of wideouts.
“And [the Steelers’] receivers coach, Zach Azzanni, he’s a good friend of mine. He loves this because everybody right now is saying, ‘Hey, the Steelers don’t have any wideouts.’ Bulls—,” Gruden said. “Wait until you see Roman Wilson. I know DK Metcalf, and I do know that Calvin Austin, used strategically, can really be a force.”
On paper, the Steelers may not have the flashiest wide receiver room in the league, but Gruden is right — Metcalf, Wilson, and Austin are immensely talented and could easily blow expectations out of the water this upcoming season.
Fans will get their first opportunity to see Pittsburgh’s underrated wide receiver trio catch passes from future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers in-game when the Steelers head to MetLife to take on the New York Jets in their regular season opener on September 7 at 1:00 p.m. EST.
