DK Metcalf‘s infamous “candy diet” has come under fire from former NFL nutritionist Leslie Bonci.
In a recent interview with Action Network, Bonci shared several concerns about Metcalf’s eating habits:
“You may be increasing the risk of injury because of not necessarily having the protein when needs over the course of the day. … There are some studies that are looking at a lot of sugar, which may — and underlying may — be pro-inflammatory, but again, it’s a little bit more speculation at this point than it is science to say that it is the case. But I think it’s just the wear and tear that happens.
“Over the course of the season, not just the time that one is on the field, it’s about having to travel and do all of these other things. The goal of eating is supposed to be supportive and to complement the activity that we do — not to work against it. To me, this is more the foe than the friend.”
Back in 2022, Metcalf’s diet went viral when he shared with NBA star Kevin Garnett that his daily meal plan consisted of drinking one coffee, eating just one meal, and downing three bags of candy.
The receiver has since claimed that he’s cut back on candy, but the Steelers‘ nutritionists should still keep an eye on their new star wide receiver. After all, Pittsburgh invested $132 million in keeping Metcalf around long-term.
