Former NFC West Rival Making Strong Impression on Rams During Camp originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Los Angeles Rams sometimes turn to past NFC West rivals to fuel the upcoming season. And not just limited to backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who had plenty of memorable battles while with the San Francisco 49ers.
Another past NFC West rival is thriving for the Rams during their NFL Training Camp. It’s D.J. Humphries at tackle — who is filling a pivotal need in L.A. for Sean McVay and company.
Humphries came over as left tackle Alaric Jackson deals with blood clots. The veteran tackle became a late addition due to the health scare involving the blindside protector. Humphries has since left a strong impression on offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur.
“We got him so late in the summer, I didn’t really know what to expect,” LaFleur explained to reporters following Friday practice. “But just in these past few days, it’s clear, he’s a professional. A real pro. It’s awesome to have him.”
LaFleur loves the fact his unit adds new trust in Humphries. Who’s veteran leadership and play has become essential at Loyola Marymount University.
“Guys like him, they raise the standard,” LaFleur said. “He’s been through it. He gets it. That matters.”
Humphries started his career in the Rams’ division. He began with the Arizona Cardinals following the 2015 NFL Draft. Humphries later helped protect Patrick Mahomes momentarily with the Kansas City Chiefs — which was last season.
Humphries earned his lone Pro Bowl nod in 2021 with the Cards. He’s helping offset the crucial absence of Jackson and immediately making a big impression on the Rams.
