Humphrey Kayange, the former captain of Kenya’s national rugby sevens team, is currently the chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, in 2026.
The appointment was made after Kirsty Coventry left her post after winning the IOC presidency in March 2025.
Before leading his national side to victory in the 2016 Singapore Sevens event and appearing in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, rugby sevens player Kayange represented Kenya for over a decade.
Kayange earned trading spots in the World Rugby Sevens Series and 2023 Hall of Fame membership as a result of his influential leadership during games.
Kayange has been a member of the IOC since 2021 and has been involved with the Athletes’ Commission during his sports career. For Dakar 2026, Kayange joined the Coordination Commission in 2022.
Throughout his long career, he has served on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Executive Committee, held leadership positions in the Kenya Rugby Union and Kenya Academy of Sports, and since 2021, he has attended the Athletes’ Commission.
As the Chair of the Coordination Commission, Kayange will oversee the preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games from October 31 to November 14, 2026.
The upcoming Olympic event will be the first time such games have been held on African soil, and Kayange will provide strategic direction to the Organizing Committee to ensure successful event operation across all areas of work. Kayange will also lead the Coordination Commission meeting in Dakar from May 7 to May 8, 2025.
Kayange prioritizes African participation in the governance of the Olympic Movement while retaining his authority in international sports management as part of his worldwide influence.
