Former Indianapolis Colts TE Jack Doyle shares initial impression of rookie Tyler Warren

Former Indianapolis Colts tight end Jack Doyle recently shared his thoughts on rookie tight end Tyler Warren.

Doyle sat down with Jeffrey Gorman on the latest episode of ‘High Volume,’ and the two discussed a variety of topics, including Doyle’s initial impression of Warren.

Doyle also spent time with JJ Stankevitz to break down Warren’s 17-catch performance last season against USC. As GM Chris Ballard noted after the draft, this particular game told the Colts everything they needed to know about Warren during the pre-draft process.

In that game, Warren caught 17-of-20 passes for 224 yards with one touchdown. He rushed the ball once in that game as well.

“He is just a stud,” Doyle said of Warren. “I mean, an all-around tight end. Obviously, I’m biased to the tight end position, but the willingness to block, his body control, his balance, his run after catch, the dragging guys four, five yards. Getting 10 yards after a seven-yard catch that saves your team from getting another first down. It’s huge and maybe something you don’t notice when you’re a casual fan just watching, but being able to not make your team convert more first downs, that’s good. We want to get yards.

Doyle continued: “And a tight end just helps a quarterback get in rhythm. It builds confidence. So, usually easier throws. Get him the ball early, make some rhythm throws, I think it’s gonna be a good thing for the Colts.”

Warren totaled over 100 receptions and over 1,200 receiving yards for Penn State in 2024. He will immediately provide the Colts’ passing game with a needed boost and has already been a favorite target during offseason programs.

Stephen Holder, who covers the Colts for ESPN, wrote recently that it was “practically impossible to watch an Indianapolis practice and not notice how often Warren touched the football.”

However, Warren’s impact within the offense will go well beyond the passing game. As Doyle mentions, he’s an “all-around tight end.” Warren has the versatility to line up across the formation and is a capable run blocker. That do-it-all presence at tight end adds some unpredictability to an offense with that player able to fill so many roles and the flexibility it then provides Shane Steichen as a play caller.
