Several former Florida Gators now find themselves on the open market following recent NFL roster cuts. Among them were defensive lineman Desmond Watson, running back Montrell Johnson and quarterback Kyle Trask.
Watson, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after going undrafted, faced challenges tied to his conditioning. The former Florida defensive lineman weighed in at 449 pounds and was unable to consistently practice with the team during training camp. While his size and strength made him a fan favorite in Gainesville, the same traits became obstacles at the professional level. Tampa Bay moved on, although Watson could get another opportunity if he can trim down and regain form.
Johnson’s release comes after signing with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this spring. The former Gator running back capped his college career with more than 3,000 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns, finishing as one of Billy Napier’s most productive players in Gainesville. Johnson faced a crowded backfield in Philadelphia, where veterans and proven depth limited his opportunities.
Perhaps the most notable cut was Trask, who also departs from Tampa Bay after three seasons. Drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the former Florida quarterback never carved out a steady role, serving mostly as a backup. With the Buccaneers committed to Baker Mayfield and reshaping their quarterback room, Trask became the odd man out.
While all three players are now free agents, they could find opportunities elsewhere. Whether it’s a practice squad opportunity or fresh start with another franchise, the coming weeks will be very important.
