The Pittsburgh Steelers have scores of former players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with several current Steelers well on their way to Canton. So we weren’t terribly surprised when ESPN put together their list of the best players drafted at each NFL draft spot, and more than a dozen made the cut.

But of course, as we went through all the picks, we did have some names immediately come to mind that didn’t make the list, and so we had to cross-reference them to see if those snubs were fair or not. For the most part, we had no arguments with any former Steelers greats who got knocked out by another pro.

However, we do feel like the Steelers did get snubbed once. ESPN failed to include Ben Roethlisberger as the pick at No. 11. Instead, ESPN went with defensive lineman J.J. Watt. While we respect Watt a ton as a player and there’s no doubt he’s one of the best defensive linemen in NFL history, we prefer Roethlisberger based simply on positional value.

It’s the same rationale we used when we didn’t consider former Steelers defensive back Rod Woodson a snub over Patrick Mahomes, despite the fact that Woodson might be the best all-around defensive back to ever play in the NFL. Mahomes, as a quarterback, has more positional value and therefore gets the nod, even though I would never rank Mahomes higher at this point in his career.
