The Denver Broncos approach Tuesday’s 2 p.m. MT roster deadline with a good problem to have: too much depth. In the preseason, the Broncos were ranked No. 1 in offense and No. 1 on defense. This means there is an abundance of talent on both sides of the ball, some of which will be left off the roster.
One of those extra pieces may be veteran cornerback Damarri Mathis. Mathis was a starter in the NFL in his 2022 rookie season, putting up solid numbers for then-defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. As the years passed, Mathis has found himself in a backup capacity.
However, Mathis is still a talented player, who could provide one of the other 31 teams around the NFL with much-needed veteran experience and depth. At least, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell thinks so. In an article projecting 10 possible pre-cut trades, Barnwell predicted Mathis could re-join Evero, who is now with the Carolina Panthers.
“With the Broncos using their 2025 first-round pick on cornerback Jahdae Barron, they could justify moving on from Mathis, who might not be active on game days even if he sticks around,” Barnwell wrote for ESPN. “Mathis’ best season came with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero in Denver, and he hasn’t been able to reach those same heights since Evero left for Carolina. The Panthers are set with Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson and nickel corner Chau Smith-Wade as their three starting corners, but Mathis could push the 28-year-old Jackson and serve as Carolina’s primary reserve on the outside. Mathis is owed $3.4 million in 2025, so Denver might essentially buy a draft pick by eating some of that cash.”
In return for Mathis, Barnwell projects a 2026 seventh-round pick, which isn’t much for the former starter who could be a help to the Panthers, who ranked dead last in total defense in 2024. With plenty of depth at the position, the Broncos can afford to move on from their No. 6 cornerback. With the predicted seventh-round compensation for Mathis, Denver could add even more draft pick capital in the 2026 NFL draft.
