ESPN’s Seth Walder wasn’t a huge fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offseason moves.
With the roster construction phase of the offseason behind us and training camps on the horizon, Walder has gone through and graded each NFL team’s offseason. The Jaguars would receive a ‘C’ for the moves they made.
The Jaguars were one of five teams to receive a ‘C,’ and only two teams had a lower grade than Jacksonville.
From the front office to the coaching staff to the roster, this has been an offseason full of change for the Jaguars, and ultimately, we can’t fully judge all these changes until we see what takes place on the football field. But with that said, the Jaguars deserve more than a ‘C’ for their offseason moves.
For starters, landing James Gladstone and Liam Coen were major wins for this team. That duo, plus Tony Boselli, forms a leadership structure that has a clear path and vision for who they want the Jaguars to be and where they are headed.
Another key point of emphasis this offseason was building around quarterback Trevor Lawrence. This includes hiring Coen, who brings a Sean McVay-esque offense to Jacksonville and one that is built on multiplicity to keep defenses off balance. That can then take some of the playmaking burden off Lawrence’s shoulders and help create opportunities for him to exploit.
Gladstone then reshaped the offensive line with six additions and added a lot more speed around Lawrence by bringing in Dyami Brown, Travis Hunter, and Bhayshul Tuten.
On defense, landing Anthony Campanile as the coordinator feels like a huge win, with his scheme and coaching style helping to elevate that entire unit. Gladstone also added stability to the secondary signing Eric Murray and Jourdan Lewis, and bolstered the defensive end depth behind Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker.
If you ask me, there were a lot of wins this offseason for the Jaguars, who are deserving of a higher grade than a ‘C.’
