The New York Jets signed quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year contract worth $40 million this offseason. It indicates the rebuilding Jets see Fields as a bridge-type quarterback. Transitioning away from the toxic Aaron Rodgers era was a must this summer.
Fields, a former first-round selection, previously wasted his opportunities with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Jets represent his third team in as many seasons. This may be Fields’ last chance to establish himself as a legitimate long-term NFL starter.
ESPN recently released an article previewing the top storylines around the league heading into training camp. How Fields handles this opportunity with the Jets is one of the featured stories.

“Few franchises have been worse at QB development over the past several seasons than the Bears,” Benjamin Solak wrote. “Rather surprisingly, the Jets gave him [Fields] a starter’s deal and an unimpeded path to the QB1 job. Now, the Jets have few pass catchers behind Garrett Wilson, but they have a pretty solid offensive line. I don’t think they’ll tip their hand (and put Fields in harm’s way) too much during training camp, but I’ll be watching the reports closely. And I won’t be surprised if we see a 2022-like season for Fields.”
Solak is referring to Fields’ 2022 season, one that saw the dual-threat QB rush for 1,143 yards via 160 carries, second-most all time for a quarterback. Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand will likely oversee a run-first offense, given the Jets’ offensive line, paired with little pass-catching depth behind Garrett Wilson. Fields appears primed for a bounce-back season.
