ESPN analyst thinks Rams need to draft these positions late in 2025 NFL Draft

The Los Angeles Rams‘ cadre of draft picks are mostly scattered on the latter sides of the second two days of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Out of the Rams’ eight selections, two are in the late third-round while four are in the sixth round. That means that, as per usual, general manager Les Snead and the entire organization will need to be surgical in who they target throughout the draft.

The Rams don’t have many clear-cut needs but will need to address positions lacking depth. Cornerback and linebacker are the two biggest, as well as receiver. Those are the areas Snead will likely go after the No. 26 pick, which will still leave some positions that need help later on in the draft.

However, ESPN’s Ben Solak wrote that the Rams need to target two other positions late in the draft: Right tackle and quarterback.

“A potential right tackle of the future should join the team somewhere in the late Day 2/early Day 3 range, as should a potential quarterback of the future — even after the Rams and Matthew Stafford came to terms this offseason,” Solak wrote. “He’s still 37, and there’s no exciting young quarterback on the Rams’ roster behind him. Kyle McCord (Syracuse) has the right play style to pair with Puka Nacua (read: he will throw anything, no matter how covered the guy is).”

L.A. locked up left tackle Alaric Jackson before free agency and have some younger pieces at guard and center, but right tackle Rob Havenstein is 33 and in the final year of his deal. Even if the Rams don’t intend to replace him yet, their is no clear succession plan at the position. Having one now eliminates any potential desperation that may be born from an injury in 2025 or a potential Havenstein departure.

As for quarterback, that’s been a point of interest throughout the draft process. Snead said the Rams are open to the idea, but that doesn’t mean they’ll draft one. The Rams have also been tied to potential first-rounders like Jaxson Dart, Jalen Milroe and even Shedeur Sanders, but the more likely scenario is a late-round prospect like the aforementioned McCord. Others, such as Will Howard and Riley Leonard, are also possibilities.

The Rams are excellent at subterfuge, so it’s impossible to ascertain what direction they’ll go in throughout the draft unless you take their positional needs at face value. But taking a developmental prospect at right tackle and quarterback late in the draft is a sound strategy to start to build a long-term plan for two crucial positions.
