Borussia Dortmund have extended their contract with coach Niko Kovac until June 2027, the Bundesliga club said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Our aim is to be as successful as possible, and we go into every game expecting conviction, intensity and passion. These are the values that Niko and his staff demand every day, and we believe that together we can build on the strong end to the previous season,” sporting director Sebastian Kehl said.

Kovac took over from Nuri Sahin in February, when the team was 11th in the league standings. Dortmund finished fourth and secured a spot in the Champions League.

He started the season with a 1-0 win against Rot-Weiss Essen in the German Cup and a 3-3 draw with St Pauli in the Bundesliga.

“We have made a lot of progress together in the last six months to get Borussia Dortmund back on track on the pitch. We sense that there’s a high level of trust in us as coaches, and we feel that we can achieve something special here together with the club and the fans,” Kovac said.

Next for Dortmund is the Bundesliga home game against Union Berlin on Sunday.
