Dorian Thompson didn't play a single snap in Eagles preseason finale

We won’t go so far as to say it was a heavyweight matchup, but most of us thought we’d at least see one more tussle in what has been a fairly entertaining roster competition. Upon the announcement of the Philadelphia Eagles‘ acquisition of Dorian Thompson-Robinson, most of us thought he’d play the third-string role at quarterback behind Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee. Still, a curveball was thrown at the NFL Draft.

Philadelphia selected Kyle McCord on Day 3, and that changed everything. It seemed the man affectionately referred to as ‘DTR’ had a new ceiling, an inevitable trip to Philly’s practice squad. Who knew? Another plot twist was coming.

Training camp began, and Thompson-Robinson refused to go quietly. Age and experience seemed to provide an advantage as he outplayed the rookie more often than not during some of the early practices. That bled over into the first preseason game vs. the Cincinnati Bengals. Both seemed comfortable, but a split court of public opinion seemed to cast more votes for the veteran.

Thomson-Robinson seemed to have a slight edge over the young McCord. Surely, he’d bury him by Week 2.

Well… That’s what we thought, but that’s also why we watch the games. Both stunk it up in a home affair vs. the visiting Cleveland Browns.

No worries, right? One game would settle everything. The preseason finale would supply us with a winner… One more plot twist… Thomson-Robinson didn’t play a single snap. McCord played for the entire four quarters.

So, what are we to make of this? Does Thompson-Robinson’s unexpected night off mean he’s locked up the job as third-string QB, or does it mean his time is up and McCord is the guy? Following the game, head coach Nick Sirianni indicated that the Eagles had enough film on Thompson-Robinson, allowing McCord his shot.

Things are getting very interesting as we near final roster cuts. This will be debated until then, but here’s the good news. We won’t have to wait much longer to be given our answer.
