The Miami Dolphins‘ backup quarterback competition isn’t much of a competition at all, according to head coach Mike McDaniel. At least not for now.
“Zach [Wilson] is the backup quarterback,” McDaniel said definitively Wednesday. “There’s no such thing as non-competition and I think Quinn [Ewers] is the type of person that is every day trying to make a real competition. Right now it’s not like that in my mind.”
Wilson, who was taken No. 2 overall by the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL draft, signed with the Dolphins in the offseason on a fully guaranteed one-year, $6 million contract. Ewers was added by Miami a month later in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft.
Through the first week of training camp, Ewers has impressed many onlookers:
Dolphins rookie QB Quinn Ewers had a strong third practice of training camp. Made several impressive, big-time throws.

The Dolphins’ starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, has taken note too.
“I think Quinn’s been balling,” Tagovailoa told reporters Wednesday. “I think he’s been buying into what he’s been told in the quarterback room and then things that he’s taken from the meeting rooms with Mike [McDaniel’s] meetings, [Bobby Slowik’s] meetings, and [Darrell Bevell’s] meetings and he’s been able to take that out here on the on the practice field and he’s been doing really well. I think Zach’s been doing pretty good as well.
“They’ll continue to work. They’ll continue to get me better. I’ll continue to get those guys better and continue to help that room grow.”
Last year, the Dolphins kept just two quarterbacks — Tagovailoa and Skylar Thompson — on their final 53-man roster at the end of training camp. If Miami decides not to keep Ewers on their roster, the rookie would have to pass through waivers before he can be signed to the team’s practice squad.
