The Chicago Bears put a lot of work into rebuilding their offensive line this offseason, making three big moves that included the additions of guards Jonah Jackson and Joe Thuney and center Drew Dalman to completely remake the interior offensive line.
With Darnell Wright at right tackle and an open competition at left tackle between veteran Braxton Jones, Kiran Amegadjie and rookie Ozzy Trapilo, the Bears should have a better offensive line in front of their young quarterback in 2025.
After giving up a league-high 68 sacks last season, the biggest focus this year will be how this new-look offensive line protects Williams, but there is also a focus on how the run game can improve, as well. Last season, the Bears ranked 24th in rushing, averaging 102 yards per game with a running back group led by D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson.
Following a down year on the ground, Swift recently shared his excitement about the new faces on the offensive line and the experience they bring with them.
“New faces and things like that. Experience, for sure. Excited to play with those guys up front,” Swift said. “A great group of guys, great group of guys. We had a great group last year, too, but just excited for those guys, the new acquisitions, the new coaches and everything like that. It’s hard to tell right now, like running game and all that type of stuff with no pads on, but I’m sure, when we get back and start really going, I’ll be able to tell, for sure.”
There will be a lot more clarity for Swift and the offense once they break in training camp, but the experience that Thuney, Jackson, and Dalman bring should have a big impact in the running game, as well as the passing game.
Last season, Swift rushed for 959 yards and six touchdowns, and he’s now reunited with Ben Johnson, who was his offensive coordinator in Detroit, and there’s hope that he can break 1,000 rushing yards this year.
