Dan Quinn talks difficult move Commanders made this week

The Washington Commanders had to make a difficult move on Monday. When wide receiver Terry McLaurin reported to training camp, the Commanders needed to make a roster move. First, they moved McLaurin from the Reserve/Did Not Report list to the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list due to an ankle injury. Washington’s corresponding move was to release undrafted rookie cornerback Fentrell Cypress.

Cypress, a 6-foot-0 cornerback from Florida State, was signed as a priority free agent after April’s NFL draft. However, the Commanders suddenly have cornerback depth with rookie second-round pick Trey Amos starring in camp and Marshon Lattimore healthy. So, they moved on from Cypress, allowing him the opportunity to land elsewhere.

Head coach Dan Quinn met with the media on Monday ahead of Washington’s first padded practice and discussed the team’s conversation with Cypress about his future.

“The first thing is that there’s going to be football ahead for him, and as part of the games go, and [General Manager] Adam [Peters] visited with him, they had a good conversation about what’s next and how do you come back,” Quinn said of Cypress.

“But I can comment on what I saw and through the OTAs, through the start of it, this is a person that has the ability to play two spots as a DB and anytime you can do that, that adds a lot of value to what you can do. And so sometimes you have to show enough to say, ‘Okay, we want to continue that,’ and he’s that type of player.”

Quinn knows defensive backs, as does defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. They liked Cypress coming out of college, but also signed another undrafted free-agent corner, Car’lin Vigers. With Amos also in the fold, Washington’s top five cornerbacks are set with Lattimore, Mike Sainristil, Amos, Jonathan Jones and Noah Igbinoghene. Vigers is likely ticketed for the practice squad.

It’s always difficult for a coach and GM to end the dreams of a young player. But with Cypress, Quinn believes he’ll be around somewhere in 2025. Washington having this type of cornerback depth is a good problem to have.
