Dan Quinn offers positive injury update on Commanders' starting OL

When the Washington Commanders lost right guard Sam Cosmi to a knee injury in the NFC Divisional Round win over Detroit in January, they expected to be without him for a portion of the 2025 season.

However, there’s a chance, even if it’s an outside one, that Cosmi could be ready for Week 1, head coach Dan Quinn said on Wednesday.

“I think it’s on the table for sure, but we won’t put that there until that,” Quinn said. “It gives you the chance for him to go be able to do that. If you wait until the season, there’s other guidelines, and you’re four weeks in and that, so he’s hitting all the markers, but let’s find out. I think we’ll have a better question on that. Or excuse me, a better answer on that as we get closer to the end of the preseason, but I’m very encouraged with the work he’s put in.”

Wow. That would be an impressive recovery for Cosmi. Let’s be clear, Quinn did not say that Cosmi would play Week 1. However, he didn’t rule it out either. He didn’t throw cold water on the notion that Cosmi could suffer an ACL injury in January and return to play in September. That’s significant.

On the first day of training camp, Nick Allegretti worked at right guard in Cosmi’s place. Allegretti started every game at left guard last season, but looks like he’ll be Washington’s top interior reserve in 2025, as Brandon Coleman is the Commanders’ left guard.

It would be a miraculous return for Cosmi. That would be less than eight months from surgery if he could play Week 1. This regime does a good job of managing expectations, especially with injuries, so for Quinn to say there’s a chance Cosmi could play Week 1, then there’s a real chance.
