Controversy Follows Caitlin Clark’s All-Star Voting Result originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark has been named as one of the two captains for the upcoming WNBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis. The reigning Rookie of the Year earned this honor after getting the most number of All-Star votes from the fans, which means that she will also get to pick her own team for the big game.
It is essential to note, however, that fan votes account for only 50% of the total tally. Votes from the media and the players represent 25% each, which determines which players have been named starters for the All-Star Game.
The WNBA released the All-Star voting results on Monday, and fans could not help but notice how her colleagues voted Clark as the ninth-best guard in the league. Players from across the league voted other guards such as Skylar Diggins (third), Paige Bueckers (fourth) and Brittney Sykes (seventh) higher than Clark. Even Indiana veteran Kelsey Mitchell (sixth) got more player votes than her superstar teammate.
The news quickly erupted on social media, and it has now stirred controversy among the fans.
“Lmao league full of clowns, it’s really funny at this point. If she’s the 9th best guard then why do they all guard her like she’s Steph Curry,” a comment on X read.
“I’d like to know what criteria these players use to rank Caitlin Clark at number 9. It’s a disgrace,” demanded a user.
“Nah this is bad. No other way to spin this!” another said.
“As the league grows the trash will be weeded out,” a reaction read.
“This is ridiculous. CC is the best player the WNBA has ever seen,” a supporter wrote.
“‘9th best’ but y’all sending traps, doubles, and switching schemes like she invented basketball 💀 Whole league building gameplans around her but wanna play cute in the votes. Stay mad haters CC got the league in a chokehold and she just warming up 🔥” said another.
At the end of the day, the player votes did not have an impact on Clark being named an All-Star captain because that is determined solely by the votes from the fans. Nevertheless, more than a few folks on social media are adamant that the way her peers voted for Clark is yet another sign of the lack of respect she gets from the competition.
