The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since 2016. But perhaps bigger than that, the Steelers haven’t won a Super Bowl since 2009. That 2008 season was special and the Steelers win over the Arizona Cardinals will go down in history as one of the greatest of all time.

This season, the Steelers seem to be breaking form from their normal conservative approach and look to be going all-in and are shooting for more than just a playoff win. Let’s compare the 2008 offense to the 2025 offense and see how comparable these groups are.

Quarterback

The 2008 team was led by a 26-year-old Ben Roethlisberger, who only threw for 206 yards per game but made big plays when the team needed him. This year’s team has future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers, who will turn 42 this season. Rodgers has an impressive resume and pedigree but some of that is balanced out by his age.

Running back

In 2008, running back duties were split primarily between Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore. Parker had 791 rushing yards and Moore had 588. This year’s tandem of Jaylen Warren and Kaleb Johnson are more talented on paper but lack the explosion of Parker that was so crucial for the Steelers offense.

Wide receiver

One of the real strengths of the 2008 Steelers offense was the trio of Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes and Nate Washington. All three were different types of receivers, all three liked to run block and they worked perfectly together. This season’s group has far more questions than answers, and beyond DK Metcalf, there isn’t a whole lot to be excited about.

Tight end

Heath Miller is the greatest tight end in franchise history and was the man when it came to receiving threats at tight end. But Matt Spaeth was just as important because of how much he helped the run game. This season’s group is definitely deeper and the talent of Pat Freiermuth is comparable to that of Miller. He, along with Darnell Washington and Jonnu Smith, could be a really special trio.

Offensive line

In 2008, the Steelers started Max Starks at left tackle and Willie Colon on the right. This was truly an underrated group. We definitely give them an edge over Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu, this year’s starting tandem. On the inside, Chris Kemoeatu and Darnell Stapleton were the guards and Justin Hartwig started at center. This was a solid trio but give us the new trio of Mason McCormick and Isaac Seumalo and guard and Zach Frazier at center 10 times out of 10.
