Washington Commanders‘ training camp may open without a much-needed defensive player.
The Commanders’ rookies report to training camp Friday, July 18, and one of their higher draft choices is not yet signed to a contract. Second-round selection (61) overall, cornerback Trey Amos has yet to put his name on the dotted line for the Commanders.
Thirty of 32 first-round draft selections have already signed their rookie contracts. Shemar Stewart (17th overall) has yet to reach an agreement with the Cincinnati Bengals. The defensive end played his college ball at Texas A&M. Jahdae Barron, the 20th overall selection by the Denver Broncos, is the other first-rounder who has yet to sign. The cornerback played at the University of Texas.
How about second-round picks like Amos? It’s the exact opposite situation, as only the top two second-rounders have signed with their respective teams. Therefore, Amos is one of the 30 second-rounders not yet locked in with their teams. So, be looking for a lot of signings this week by those drafted in the second round.
Amos began his college football career at Louisiana (not to be confused with LSU). He played his first three seasons at Louisiana before transferring to Alabama. Finally, for his final college season, Amos played for the Ole Miss Rebels.
“He was in the mix for our first-round pick,” general manager Adam Peters said during his Day 2 NFL draft press conference. “So, that’s what we thought of him just on a high level. Really, really impressed with the type of young man and player he is.”
Amos is considered a long corner, standing at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds. While at the annual NFL Scouting Combine, Amos ran a 4.43 40-yard dash and also executed a 10-foot-6 broad jump. Some analysts actually predicted Amos to be a late first-round draft selection. “He’s earned everything he’s got and…is really, really what we want in a corner,” Peters said.
Veterans are expected to report on July 22, and receiver Terry McLaurin has not yet come to an agreement on a contract extension. Remember, McLaurin is under contract for this 2025 season and would be subject to fines according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
