Commanders add a wide receiver in Terry McLaurin's absence

The Washington Commanders and Terry McLaurin have yet to agree on a contract extension, which has resulted in McLaurin not reporting for camp this week. McLaurin has expressed frustration with this process, and despite both sides wanting to get a deal done, they are struggling to find common ground. As such, the Commanders added a wide receiver ahead of training camp practice on Wednesday.

Martin entered the league in 2022 when he signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent. He spent two seasons on their practice squad before signing with the Tennessee Titans in 2024. He was on the Titans’ practice squad for most of the season, but was elevated to the main roster on January 4. He participated in the Titans’ Week 18 loss to the Houston Texans, recording his first career reception, a 49-yard touchdown pass from Will Levis.

Martin is unlikely to be on the Commanders’ active roster when the season starts, but with McLaurin not reporting for camp, the Commanders brought in an additional body to keep the rotation in check.

Adam Peters answered plenty of questions about McLaurin and the contract negotiations at yesterday’s press conference, but it still feels like the two sides are not close to an agreement. It will be tragic if McLaurin doesn’t suit up in burgundy and gold this fall, and if Peters truly grasps that, he will make sure Scary Terry doesn’t go anywhere.
