Coming up: Columbus Crew kick off 2025 Leagues Cup vs Toluca FC in group stage

The Crew are set to kick off their 2025 Leagues Cup against Toluca FC at Lower.com Field on July 29, marking the first time the Crew have faced a Liga MX team since the 2024 Campeones Cup, where they fell in penalty kicks to Club America.

Prior to Copa America, the Crew had success against Liga MX squads, defeating Tigres and CF Monterrey on the road to the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup final. The Crew lost 3-0 in the final against CF Pachuca.

During their run to the 2024 Leagues Cup title, the Crew played only MLS teams, as they entered the tournament in the round of 16.

The Crew’s group-stage matchup against Toluca is the first of three, all against Liga MX teams.

“I’m really excited, I like to play against different styles of play,” Crew coach Wilfried Nancy said. “It’s going to be three new teams that we haven’t played. So, really happy. It’s good teams, good players, different mentality, so it’s perfect.”

The Crew will face Club Puebla on Aug. 1 and Club Leon on Aug. 5 in the group stage.

Puebla is ranked 35th in the Leagues Cup rankings, with Leon at 27th.

The Crew are going into Leagues Cup as the fourth-ranked team in the field of 36, with Toluca just one spot above at third. Toluca’s higher ranking has led to the Liga MX team being considered the home team for the matchup, despite the game being played at Lower.com Field.

Columbus and Toluca are “tier one” teams from their respective league for the tournament. Tier one consists of the top-three ranked team from each league.
