Colts Starting QB Competition Already Decided, per NFL Analyst originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Indianapolis Colts were one of the biggest headlines of this NFL offseason with their impending quarterback competition. Incumbent, Anthony Richardson, has shown rare glimpses of potential greatness, but his inconsistency has far outweighed the flashes to this point in his career.
This rollercoaster ride, along with a problematic injury history, is what led the Colts to sign veteran quarterback Daniel Jones for competition. The former New York Giants signal caller has had a tumultuous career as well, but he has proven to have a much higher floor than Richardson.
Both players were reportedly going to be given an equal chance to win the job, but the battle might be over before it even begins.
The former No. 4 overall pick suffered a shoulder injury earlier in the summer which is expected to sideline him until the start of training camp. While there are currently no team activities going on, Richardson is losing valuable time getting reps with teammates, while Jones is rapidly getting familiarized with the offense.
According to Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports, the race looks like it may already be over.
“Richardson needs to take command of the offense this summer, or he will be watching Jones start Week 1. His shoulder injury may give Jones the job, especially if Jones impresses with the first team while Richardson is on the mend,” he said.
Luckily for the Florida product, he has publicly stated that he will be back for the start of training camp. However, he is already behind the 8-ball, so one rough practice could seal his fate as the backup quarterback or a trade candidate.
