Chiefs Reveal One Big ‘Going Deep’ Change In 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs, under Patrick Mahomes, have been known for having an explosive offense, with points being scored at will in his early years.

However, that has somewhat disappeared from the game plan in recent seasons, with Mahomes’ yards per game in the last two years being his worst in his career (261 in 2023 and 245 in 2024).

That is a far cry from having the 280+ per game in four of his first five seasons, along with at least 37 passing touchdowns.

Now, it appears the Chiefs want to get that part of their offense back.

And for offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, it isn’t only the coaching staff’s responsibility to call the right plays at the right time; it is also on Patrick to seize the opportunity when there is a chance to go for it all.

“We have to be able to put the plays in that give you that [big play chance], but then at the same point in time you’ve got to pull the trigger, you’ve got to take that shot downfield,” Nagy said. “We’ve got to try to put in the right plays and then obviously call it at the right time. But it’s a mindset and you’ve got to stick to it and it’s constant, every single day. Not just every week. It’s every single day and then it just becomes reality.”

So, one thing we now know about the Chiefs in 2025 is they will be going deep.

With Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Marquise Brown, and rookie Jalen Royals, there are weapons who can get downfield.

However, as we know, last season, Kansas City attempted the same approach, and it was Mahomes’ worst return for passing yards per game (245) and his lowest yards per completion of his career (10.0), so it isn’t exactly an easy task.

But that is what OTAs and training camp are for. To practice it. Because we know Mahomes can do it, having shown it early in his career, he now has to get back to being “that” quarterback.

And if he can, then the shape of the 2025 season might just take on a whole new look, and it’s one that defenses might not want to see.
