Chargers stomp Lions in Hall of Fame Game: Analysis of Los Angeles' preseason win

The Chargers opened up preseason play with a win over the Lions in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game, defeating Detroit by the score of 34-7.

They scored their first touchdown on the opening drive. The Chargers had control of the entire game and never surrendered the lead.

Quick hits

  • Even though it was preseason action, the Chargers dominated in all facets.
  • Offensively, Trey Lance made a statement with his two-touchdown performance. The former No. 3 overall pick was comfortable and precise with his passes.
  • KeAndre Lambert-Smith, the rookie out of Auburn, who has been shining in training camp, continued to impress. He notched a touchdown catch and caught a deep ball for a 28-yard gain, showing the capability of being a vertical threat in this offense.
  • First-round pick Omarion Hampton only played in the opening drive, carrying the ball two times for eight yards.
  • Several running backs saw the field, hoping to earn a spot in the backend of the position room. Kimani Vidal led the group with his two-touchdown performance. Vidal rushed nine times for 37 yards (4.1 yards per carry). Hassan Haskins led the bunch with 5.7 YPC. Nyheim Miller-Hines, who was recently signed, averaged 4.3 YPC.
  • Zion Johnson made the start at center and his play was shaky, which included a botched snap.
  • Defensively, Jesse Minter’s unit produced three turnovers one of which was by undrafted rookie Nikko Reed. Reed, the undrafted rookie out of Oregon, has been a standout this summer and continued his stellar showings with the pick, a pass breakup and a couple of special teams tackles.
  • Veteran safety Tony Jefferson and undrafted rookie Myles Purchase amassed the other two INTs.
  • On special teams, the Chargers forced and recovered two fumbles.

What’s next?

The Chargers will resume training camp practices on Saturday, August 2. Their next game is next Sunday, August 10, at 1:05 pm PT, when they host the Saints.
