The Boston Celtics have lost a lot of their championship DNA this offseason. Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Luke Kornet are all on different teams, and Al Horford will likely join them in free agency.
However, the Celtics have been linked to another former champion in the form of five-time All-Star Kevin Love.
Love was traded from the Miami Heat to the Utah Jazz earlier this week, and is expected to be bought out by Utah, per Forbes’ Evan Sidery.
In lieu of recent moves, the team’s current frontcourt depth is very thin. Xavier Tillman, Neemias Queta, Luka Garza and Amari Williams currently make up the team’s depth at center. Despite the Celtics likely being out of contention next season, NESN’s Colin Keane explains why Love could make sense for the team on a two-year deal.
“ Love could spend next season familiarizing himself with Joe Mazzulla’s system and inserting himself as a veteran presence in Boston’s locker room,” Keane said. “ Moreover, Love’s ability to stretch the floor as a power forward or center fits perfectly into Mazzulla’s and Stevens’ vision for a modern big man.”
Love has spent the last three seasons with the Heat, and while he may not be the player he once was he is still impactful on the court. He averaged 7.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in 99 appearances (31 starts) with Miami.
