Cameron Norrie in sportsmanship row during epic five-set victory

Cameron Norrie has a big heart, both literally and figuratively, and it carried him through an epic – and often bad-tempered – five-set win over 6ft 7in servebot Nicolas Jarry.

Jarry became extremely disgruntled about Norrie first-pumping and shouting “Come on”, to the point where the two men had words after the match point. Jarry was booed by the crowd and umpire Eva Asderaki began to descend from her chair, in case she needed to separate them, although the argument never escalated that far.

Norrie’s remarkable cardiovascular capacity came in very useful during the four hours and 27 minutes he spent on a captivated No 1 Court.

He saw a two-set lead eroded by the uber-powerful Jarry, during an extraordinary sequence of 38 straight holds of serve which required sets two, three and four to be decided by tie-breaks.

But Norrie still remained patient and snatched his opportunity when it came along in the deciding set.

Jarry came off the court with ridiculously good statistics: 103 winners, including an almost absurd tally of 46 aces, to place against 71 unforced errors. For Norrie to withstand such extraordinary tennis and not give up a single break of serve must make this one of the finest performances of his career. It was certainly the longest match he has ever played.

Norrie may have drawn extra inspiration from the tension between the two players, which manifested itself during some unusual displays of passive aggression.

After the second-set tie-break, Jarry had complained vociferously to chair umpire Eva Asderaki about the length of time that Norrie was taking between first and second serves.

“Is there a rule? Do you have to intervene or do I have to suck it up?” said Jarry to Asderaki after the second-set tie-break, in reference to at least one point where Norrie bounced the ball excessively before hitting his second serve.

“He can stop doing it,” Jarry added. “It’s not a nervous tick, it is something he can control.” Asderaki replied that she could only intervene if she felt it was a case of deliberate gamesmanship. Jarry replied “It affects me, so if the rule says you have to do something if it affects me, then do it.”

Jarry then mocked Norrie with a hugely extended delay before a second serve in the third-set tie-break. Whereupon Norrie did the same thing straight back to him. This bizarre and somewhat childish sequence highlighted an obvious gap in the tennis rules, because the shot-clock only runs before first serves.

There were also a few instances of attempted “tubing”: tennis jargon for when a player aims straight at the body of their net-rushing opponent from short range.

Norrie is thus through to the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the second time in four years. But he will probably have to give up his regular berth on his favoured No 1 Court if he plays Carlos Alcaraz in the next round.

Norrie performed an ungainly roll onto the turf at the conclusion of this match: a celebration that showed how much the win meant to him. Rightly so, for it was a wonderful demonstration of technique, determination and mental strength.

The thoughts of Cameron Norrie

“Honestly I do not know [how he got through it]. Credit to Nicolas, who did an unbelievable job staying with me. He played better than me in both tie-breaks so he deserved it. I did not want his game style to bother me. I just had to keep fighting. I forgot to give my coach a birthday present and it is his birthday today! I had to get him something so I got him the win.

“He [Nicolas] said I was a little bit vocal but that is my energy and I was pulling from my team. I told him he competed so well and it was an amazing, competitive match which I loved. You guys [the crowd] pulled me through at the end. He hung in there and I took care of my serve. I hung tough when I needed to and the atmosphere was so good. You guys were amazing.

“It feels amazing [to be in the quarter-finals]. At the beginning of this year I was struggling with my confidence and I had some doubts. I wanted to enjoy my tennis a little more and I am doing that. I enjoyed that today. It was a bonus to win but I was more happy that I was enjoying it and playing point by point. I had to use my extra large lungs a bit today. A few points today they came in handy. I am so happy to be through to another quarter-final here as it is the best tournament in the world!”

Meanwhile on Centre Court

Andrey Rublev has taken the first set against Carlos Alcaraz and you can follow that match right here.

07:07 PM BST

What a match!

Nearly four-and-a-half hours after we began, Norrie can now look forward to the quarter-finals, where he will meet either Carlos Alcaraz or Andrey Rublev. Speaking of those two…

07:06 PM BST

Norrie into the quarter-finals

First point of the game Jarry hits into the net. 15-0 Norrie.

Jarry is then unable to return Norrie’s serve straight at him. 30-0 Norrie.

Another fantastic serve that Jarry cannot return properly. 40-0 Norrie.

Three match points for the Briton. What a way to do it! At the end of a rally where he was scampering around the court, Norrie wins a stunning point and falls to the ground. There is a bit of a heated discussion between the pair at the end, which results in some boos from the crowd but the players make up and the crowd clap Jarry off.

Norrie wins 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.

07:03 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (5-7), 5-3 Jarry*

Jarry goes 30-0 up but Norris hits back by winning the next two points. The Chilean then responds with an ace, number 45 of the match for him, and then finishes the game with ace number 46. Jarry is hanging on.

Norrie will be serving for the match.

06:57 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (5-7), 5-2 Jarry

Jarry goes 0-15 up on Norrie’s serve before the Briton hits back by winning the next three points. However he hits into the net to give Jarry hope in this game. But Norrie ends that hope immediately to take the game and he is now one game away from the quarter-final.

06:53 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (5-7), 4-2 Jarry*

A reminder after Sonay Kartal’s exit earlier, Norrie is the last Briton standing in the singles. Can Norrie put some pressure here on the Jarry serve? He keeps Jarry honest as the game goes to 30-30. A mistake down the line with his forehand from Jarry gifts Norrie a break point.

Can Jarry lean on his serve at a crucial moment? He comes to the net with Norrie on the run and saves the break point. Jarry comes to the net once more and gets advantage. Jarry hits into the net though and we are back to deuce.

A great return from Norrie forces Jarry to hit into the net and Norrie has his second break point of this game but he is unable to take it after a stunning serve from Jarry. The Chilean wins the next two points and holds serve.

06:43 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (5-7), 4-1 Jarry

Jarry wins the first point of the game but Norrie hits back by winning the next four points, which includes a lovely drop shot, to see out the game.

06:41 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (5-7), 3-1 Jarry*

Jarry flies through that service game and gets on the board in this set.

06:37 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (5-7), 3-0 Jarry

Moments after he breaks Jarry’s serve, Norrie starts his latest service game with a double fault but he responds with a great forehand down the line.

It is a tight game and we head to deuce when Norrie had the chance to see out the game at 40-30 up. Norrie then goes long and Jarry has the chance to break straight back. If Norrie gives this game away he will kick himself.

Norrie though takes it back to deuce before Jarry gets a chance of a second break point. A great forehand down the line saves break point once again for Norrie. Jarry nails a forehand to earn his third break point but once more cannot take it.

This time it is Norrie who has advantage but he cannot take it. It happens again that Norrie has an advantage that he cannot take.

But at the next opportunity the Briton takes it to move 3-0 up. That games lasted more than 10 minutes and we are just shy of the four-hour mark.

06:27 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (5-7), 2-0 Jarry*

Jarry’s goes 30-0 up on serve but Norrie hits back, winning the next two points. The latest saw an incredible rally, with Jarry at the net and Norrie running around. Somehow the Briton won the point.

Jarry then double faults and this is a big opportunity for Norrie with this break point. There is then pressure on Jarry’s second serve and Norrie wins the point to break Jarry’s serve. Big, big moment in the match.

06:21 PM BST

Fifth set: Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 Jarry

Norrie will serve at the start of this deciding set. He has gone from two sets up to two sets all and into a decider. The Briton holds serve in the opening game of this fifth set.

06:12 PM BST

Jarry takes us to decider

Jarry will serve first in this tie break and his serve is so strong that you cannot see Norrie getting many points from it in this tie-break so the Briton’s serve has to be on point. Jarry wins the first point on serve and takes a 1-0 lead. A stunning backhand across the court from Jarry takes him 2-0 up. Norrie gets up and running in the tie-break to take it to 2-1 down but now comes consecutive serves from Jarry.

Jarry finds the net though and we are all square at 2-2. That is one of the shots of the day; Norrie unleashes a stunning forehand down the line and wins both of those points of Jarry’s serve. Jarry goes long and Norrie has gone from 0-2 down to 4-2 up. Norrie spurns a chance to go 5-2 up and it is now 4-3 to the Briton, with two Jarry serves incoming.

Jarry makes it back-to-back points and we are all square again at 4-4. The Chilean has the next serve and wins the point to take the lead at 5-4. However on the next point he crashes one into the net and we are level once more at 5-5.

Norrie then goes long and Jarry has set point to take us to a decider. An ace seals it for the Chilean and we go to a fifth and deciding set. Norrie will be kicking himself in both of the last two tie-breaks.

Norrie hasn’t done much wrong. It’s a serious feat to have held serve throughout this match. But two tie-break sets lost 9-7 and 7-5 must be a sickener. Can he maintain his equanimity?

06:03 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-6 Jarry

Norrie loses the first point on this service game but fires back, winning the next two points. However Jarry makes it 30-30 with a stunning backhand return down the line.

Norrie though responds by winning the next point and is 40-30 up. The Briton hits the net and we go to deuce.

It is then Jarry’s turn to find the net and Norrie has advantage. He seals the game and we go to a third straight tie-break. What a game we are being treated to.

05:57 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 5-6 Jarry*

Jarry does not drop a point in that game and, once more, Norrie’s serve will be under sever pressure as he serves to stay in this set.

05:55 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 5-5 Jarry

We are now three-and-a-quarter hours into this match and Norrie is under pressure on serve. Norrie though holds serve and we are all square at 5-5 in this fourth set.

05:50 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 4-5 Jarry*

It is remarkable how many aces we have seen from Jarry today, which has kept him in this match really. Jarry goes 30-0 up before a stunning forehand return from Norrie gets him going in this game.

Yet another ace from Jarry takes him 40-15 up but a loose shot gives Norrie hope. The Chilean then makes an absolute mess of a drop shot and we go to deuce. What was Jarry doing?

Jarry responds by winning the next two points and Norrie will be serving to stay in this set.

05:45 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 4-4 Jarry

Jarry wasted a great break opportunity in Norrie’s last service game but he goes 30-0 up in this one. However Norrie bounces back, winning the next three points, the latest at the end of a superb rally. The Briton has gone from 0-30 down to 40-30 up. Jarry looks like he will take the game to deuce with a forehand down the line but it goes just out and Norrie holds serve.

05:40 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 3-4 Jarry*

Jarry goes 15-0 up but then suffers his seventh double fault of the match. But there is no stopping the Chilean for the rest of the game as he wins the next three points, including a few more powerful aces.

05:38 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 3-3 Jarry

Is this Jarry’s moment to get a big break? He goes 30-0 up on Norrie’s serve but the Briton brings it back to 30-30 after winning a stunning rally where he had to do plenty of running.

Jarry then goes long and Norrie goes 40-30 up but the Briton hits into the net to take us to deuce.

A superb backhand down the line from Jarry gives him a break point. Can the Chilean take it? No as his return is long.

Then, at one of the worst moments, Norrie suffers his fifth double fault of the match and Jarry has another break point. After a stunning, lengthy rally, Norrie takes it back to deuce.

Jarry earns himself a third break point of the game but once again is denied by Norrie, which is met with a great roar by the crowd. Jarry then goes long and Norrie now has the advantage, which he takes with a sublime ace. What a hold from Norrie.

05:28 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 2-3 Jarry*

Both players have been strong on serve today so any break now will be very significant. On Jarry’ serve, Norrie goes 30-15 up and then Jarry goes long. Norrie has two vital break points; can he take one?

An ace from Jarry keeps the Chilean alive and he wins the next point to save both break points. Another ace gives Jarry advantage and he then seals the game.

05:23 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 2-2 Jarry

Norrie races through the game without dropping a point, sealing the game with an ace.

05:21 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 1-2 Jarry*

Jarry goes 40-15 up but Norrie stays alive in the game as Jarry’s shot at the net goes long. Norrie’s return from the next Jarry serve goes long and Jarry goes 2-1 up in the fourth set.

05:17 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 1-1 Jarry

Norrie drops just the one point in holding serve. A part of him will be wondering how he is not off the court having wasted a great chance to seal the match in the tie-break in the last set.

05:14 PM BST

Fourth set: Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 0-1 Jarry*

Is the momentum just starting to shift? Jarry holds serve with ease at the start of the fourth set.

05:09 PM BST

Jarry claims the third set in a tie-break

Norrie will serve first in this tie-break and the home crowd get right behind him. Jarry goes long and Norrie goes 1-0 up. Norrie hits his return into the net and it is 1-1. Perfect time to send down an ace from Jarry as he goes 2-1 up. A sublime shot across the course brings Norrie level at 2-2. Jarry’s return from Norrie’s second serve goes just out and the Briton leads 3-2.

Jarry hits into the net and Norrie now holds a 4-2 lead. Jarry responds by winning the next point to stay alive but Norrie will have the next two serves. Jarry makes a big error, slamming a simple forehand into the net and Norrie leads 5-3. Not the time to double fault and Jarry is back in this with the next two serves coming his way.

Jarry wins back-to-back points and we are all square at 5-5. But Norrie wins the next point despite a diving Jarry throwing himself and the racket ultimately towards the ball and Norrie has match point.

Jarry responds by winning the next point and we are all square at 6-6. Big next serve coming up from Norrie.

That is a stunning backhand across the court from Jarry and he will be serving for the set. But, just as you think the Chilean may see out the set, he suffers a very untimely double fault. But he follows that up with another ace and leads 8-7 to set up another set point.

Jarry nails the forehand down the line and takes the third set.

Some intriguing passive aggression during that tie-break. Earlier in the match, Jarry had complained vociferously to chair umpire Eva Asderaki about the length of time that Norrie was taking between first and second serves.

04:57 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-6 Jarry*

Jarry does not drop a point in that service game and, like the second set, we go to a tie-break.

04:54 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-5 Jarry

Norrie goes 30-0 up on serve but a shot into the net gives Jarry hope. A forehand takes Norrie to 40-15 up. Jarry gets his return to Norrie’s serve all wrong and Norrie takes the game.

Pressure back on the Jarry serve to stay in the match.

Even this reliably supportive British crowd is feeling a bit brain-numbed by the one-dimensional nature of Jarry’s tennis. They enjoyed the last 122mph Norrie serve, which rushed through Jarry’s defences and brought a top edge to the wicketkeeper. But they’re not as loud as they were.

04:51 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 5-5 Jarry*

Jarry is serving to stay in the match and he starts the game with an ace at 136mph! The Chilean races through the rest of the game without dropping a point and stays in the match.

04:47 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 5-4 Jarry

Norrie flies through that game and is just one game away from the quarter-final.

04:45 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 4-4 Jarry*

Big service game for Jarry, who needs to hold serve or else Norrie will be a service game away from victory.

The Chilean is not giving up on this match quite yet as he races to 40-0 up. Norrie does win one point but Jarry seals the game with a powerful forehand down the line.

04:42 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 4-3 Jarry

At 15-0 up, Norrie mixes up his serve angle. Jarry thinks he is going across the court but from a tough angle he sends an ace down the middle.

Norrie is then 40-15 up but suffers a double fault to give Jarry hope. Jarry takes the chance to staying alive in this game and we go to deuce. Norrie though wins the next two points and holds serve.

04:37 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 3-3 Jarry*

Jarry moves 30-0 up but then Norrie wins the next point at the end of a stunning rally that involved plenty of running from both players.

Norrie goes long though and Jarry will serve for the game at 40-15 up. An ace seals it for Jarry.

04:33 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 3-2 Jarry

How did Norrie not win that point? He had Jarry on the ropes and on the run but was perhaps too complacent and Jarry manages to win the point.

Norrie though responds by winning the next four points, sealing the game with a sublime backhand down the line.

04:30 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 2-2 Jarry*

Ace number 20 in this match and 85 for the tournament for Jarry. After losing the next point, Jarry delivers yet another ace. But once again Norrie responds by winning the next point and we are level at 30-30.

Jarry tries coming to the net but Norrie gets the better of his opponent, giving him a break point. He does not even get the chance to hit a return as Jarry nails an ace down the middle.

He moves to advantage but that is not the time to suffer a double fault. Norrie goes long and Jarry moves back to advantage. Jarry moved forward after his serve, thinking he was about to win the point but he looks back and sees Norrie’s return land in.

Another advantage comes Jarry’s way but once more he cannot take it. But on the next occasion Jarry gets an advantage he can take it with a backhand down the line.

04:21 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 2-1 Jarry

Norrie races through that point without dropping a point.

04:20 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 1-1 Jarry*

Does Norris sniff a break? It is 30-30 on Jarry’s serve after the Chilean hits into the net. Jarry then goes long and Norrie has a break point early in this third set.

Jarry’s serve comes up trumps just when he needs it as he delivers a 135mph ace. He sends down another ace and has advantage. He seals the game but only just as his forehand winner is so close to being too long.

The Chilean is top of the pile on 84 aces so far in this tournament.

04:15 PM BST

Third set: Norrie* 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 Jarry

The total points won in that second set are very similar but Jarry has 17 unforced errors compared to Norrie’s four. Jarry was involved in animated discussions with the chair umpire in between the sets, which lasted a fair amount of time. More than six minutes pass between the end of the second set and the first serve of the third.

Norrie will serve at the start of the third set. He goes 30-0 up but a missed forehand gives Jarry an in. However the Chilean suffers a terrible misses and then goes long to hand Norrie the game. The Briton holds serve and Jarry is still looking a little agitated.

A delightful drop shot from Norrie though brings him level at 1-1. A stunning backhand down the line from Jarry takes the Chilean 2-1 up. Jarry goes long though and it is 2-2. Long again from the Chilean and Norrie moves 3-2 up, with two of his own serves coming up.

I am typing it again as Jarry goes long once more. 4-2 Norrie. Jarry hits the net, which puts Norrie in firm control of this tie-break at 5-2 up.

Norrie hits the net though with his backhand to stunt the momentum. Jarry nails a stunning forehand and the Chilean is not giving up on this tie-break. 5-4.

Jarry hits the net with his forehand on the run and Norrie is 6-4 up.

What a way to win the set as Norrie nails a backhand across the court and he lets out an almighty roar.

Such a patient set by Norrie there. Survived a few 15-30 service games then played an excellent tie-break. It hasn’t been great spectating, to be honest. The average rally length dropped below three shots. There were only three points that lasted nine shots. Very staccato tennis. But no one will care if Norrie goes through.

03:59 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 6-6 Jarry

Change of shirt for Norrie at the start of this service game, which is crucial for the Briton to stay in this game. Norrie goes 15-0 up but Jarry wins the next two point.

Norrie wins a crucial next point as Jarry’s backhand goes into the net.

Norrie then sends down a vital ace and is one point away from a tie-break in this second set.

Jarry hits into the net and we go to a tie-break.

Jarry’s return to Norrie’s next serve goes wide and Norrie is in position to hold.

Jarry hits his latest return into the net and we are now 5-5 in this second set.

03:49 PM BST

Norrie 6-3, 4-5 Jarry*

Jarry’s serve has been very impressive but he suffers a double fault. He responds though with a strong serve that Norrie can only return into the net and then an ace to put him 30-15 up.

It is a second double fault of the game, his third of this set, and we are level at 30-30. Does Norrie sense a break here?

He may have been wishing for one but Jarry wins the next two points, including an ace to seal the game. If Jarry gets a break here, he would take the second set.

03:45 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 4-4 Jarry

It is a good job we have a roof on Court One as the rain is hammering down in Wimbledon. The people on Murray Mound/ Henman Hill are getting drenched but they are in good spirits.

Norrie moves 30-15 up but he hits the net. Does Jarry sense a chance of a break? A poor forehand though from the Chilean goes into the net and Norrie will serve for the game.

Jarry goes 40-15 up but goes long so Norrie has the chance to stay in the game.

Norrie cannot take it though as he goes long. Jarry holds serve.

Norrie 6-3, 2-3 Jarry*

Norrie is putting up a good fight on Jarry’s serve in this game. It is 30-30 and all to play for in this game.

Jarry wins the next point with a forehand and moves 40-30 up.

An ace from the Chilean seals the game and he holds serve.

03:27 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 2-2 Jarry

Not only as Jarry changed racket, he has now changed shirt. That change does not serve the Chilean well though as Norrie races through the game without dropping a point.

This set is taking a familiar look to the start of the first.

Norrie 6-3, 1-2 Jarry*

After losing the first point of the game, Jarry decides it is time to change racket and it immediately pays dividends as he sends down an ace.

Jarry flies through the rest of that game so the racket change was a masterstroke!

Norrie almost hit that last return with his backside on the scoreboard. He was in danger of falling over the court covers, he was so deep. A testament to the power of the Jarry serve.

03:20 PM BST

Norrie* 6-3, 1-1 Jarry

What a delightful point to start the game. Three consecutive drop shots are executed to perfection, with Norrie coming out on top in that point.

Jarry responds though by winning the next two points. Norrie hits back, taking us to 30-30. He wins the next two points and Norrie holds serve.

03:17 PM BST

Second set: Norrie 6-3, 0-1 Jarry*

The Chilean will serve at the start of this second set. He wins the first point of the game but Norrie responds by winning the next two points.

A stunning ace that Norrie could get nowhere near though brings us level at 30-30. Another ace moves Jarry 40-30 clear and the Chilean’s blistering serve is serving him well. Just as I say that he then suffers a costly double fault, which takes us to deuce.

Jarry smashes a forehand into the net, a poor error, and Norrie has an early break point in this second set. Jarry’s serve is back working in his favour though and gets back to deuce.

A stunning ace down the middle at 132mph gives Jarry advantage and he sees out the game as Norrie goes long.

03:09 PM BST

Norrie takes first set 6-3

How will Jarry respond to being broken? He wins the first point of the game but a forehand on the run into the net brings Norrie level at 15-15.

Norrie wins the next two points to move 40-15 up and has two set points.

Jarry stays alive as Norrie’s forehand hits the top of the net and goes out. Can Norrie take the second set point?

Yes he can with a superb ace across the court and he takes the first set 6-3.

Unusual stats in that set which emphasise the contrast in styles. Jarry 11 winners and 14 unforced errors. Norrie two winners – the concluding ace that the only drop shot he hit all set – but just three unforced. He’s won 27 points to Jarry’s 19.

Norrie 5-3 Jarry*

We are yet to see a break but could we see a crucial one here? Norrie wins the first two points of Jarry’s latest service game.

Jarry then makes an error and Norrie has three break points. Big, big moments here in the first set.

Jarry goes long, another unforced error, and Norrie gets a vital break.

He will serve for the first set.

03:01 PM BST

Norrie* 4-3 Jarry

Are we going to stay on serve again? Despite Jarry winning the first point of the game, Norrie wins the next four and seals the game with ease. We do stay on serve and a break now for Norrie would be welcomed by the home favourite but that will be easier said than done considering the way Jarry is serving.

Norrie 3-3 Jarry*

Another ace down the middle for Jarry, this time at 131mph. He has a reputation for being a big server and he is proving it thus far. The Chilean then sends down another ace.

Norrie then cannot get his return over the net and Jarry is racing through this game.

Jarry completes the job to love and we stay on serve.

02:55 PM BST

Norrie* 3-2 Jarry

We have been on serve in the first four games of this match and Norrie continues that into the fifth, winning to love. We are yet to see a break but you would imagine a break for Norrie now would give him one hand on the first set.

The running backhand appears to be a bit of an issue for Jarry early. Which is promising because it’s the one shot that a left-hander like Norrie, with the curl he puts on the ball, should be able to exploit

02:53 PM BST

Norrie 2-2 Jarry*

Jarry sends down an ace to start his latest service game. The Chilean then races through the rest of the game and we are 2-2 in the first set.

02:49 PM BST

Norrie* 2-1 Jarry

Norrie holds his serve with a fair amount of ease, dropping just the one point in the game. That game included a delightful drop shot that had so much finesse on it. It looked like he was going to hit a big forehand but went with the delicate shot instead.

A real David and Goliath contest here with Jarry unleashing astonishing power from one end but Norrie holding firm so far. If anything, Jarry is hitting an even bigger ball than Marin Cilic did to beat British No 1 Jack Draper on Thursday evening. I’m hugely impressed with the way Norrie has handled that ball-speed in the opening three games.

02:47 PM BST

Norrie 1-1 Jarry*

Jarry is a gigantic man; 6ft 7in or 201cm to be exact, and he has a big serve. He shows great power to move 30-0 up on serve before hitting the net after a lengthy rally to give Norrie some hope in this game. Unsurprisingly the crowd are right behind Norrie, their home man.

Jarry hits the net again and we are all square at 30-30.

Jarry though wins the next two points, including an ace, and holds on his first service game.

02:42 PM BST

First set: Cameron Norrie* 1-0 Nicolas Jarry (*denotes server)

The first point of the match goes to Jarry, with a superb forehand that Norrie could not get anywhere near. Jarry follows that up with another forehand winner but Norrie gets on the board for the first time in the match. Norrie really should be 0-40 down but it is an error from Jarry, who makes an unforced error and hits the net.

Norrie then makes it 30-30 but then goes long to hand Jarry the first break point of the match.

Jarry cannot take it though as his return hits the net and we go to deuce.

Norrie wins the next two points and holds serve in the opening game.

Here we go

The warm-ups are complete and we are ready to go on Court One. Who will book their place in the quarter-final? Cameron Norris or Nicolas Jarry.

02:35 PM BST

Nearly ready for action

Both players are out on Court One and going through their warm-ups, a bit earlier than they thought due to the retirement of Jordan Thompson in his match against Taylor Fritz. We are nearly ready for action.

On Centre Court

Whilst one Briton waits to get going, another is already in action. Sonay Kartal is in the first set on Centre Court against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and you can follow all the action from that match right here if you wish.

02:25 PM BST

Thank goodness for a roof!

The heavens have opened at SW19 and it is a good job Centre Court and Court One have roofs, or else we would currently have no action as we have had thunderstorms and torrential rain already this afternoon.

GB Davis Cup captain Leon Smith on BBC Radio 5 Live

“Cameron Norrie is not someone that is always massively expressive, although you do get some players that are like that.

“But I always prefer when he does engage a little bit more, especially here at Wimbledon, because that extra bit of adrenaline from bringing the crowd into play is really important when you really needed them behind you in crucial moments.

“His love of Court One comes from winning a lot on it, and we all know how superstitious players are. He has a good feeling about it so you have to keep that going.”

02:13 PM BST

Earlier than planned

On the first game on Court One, American Taylor Fritz was taking on Australian Jordan Thompson. Fritz won the first set 6-1 and was 3-0 up in the second before Thompson had to retire due to injury. That is why Norrie is on earlier than initially scheduled.

Can Norrie reach the quarter-finals?

Hello and welcome to day seven coverage from Wimbledon as Cameron Norrie bids to reach the quarter-finals. The world No 61 faces Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry in the fourth round when he will attempt to keep alive British interest in the men’s singles draw. Norrie was beaten in four sets by seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in the last four of the Championships in 2022 – by far his best performance at a major. Following successive Court No 1 victories over 12th seed Frances Tiafoe and Italian Mattia Bellucci following a first-round win over Roberto Bautista Agut, he sees similarities with the summer of three years ago.

“From the beginning of the tournament I was here to play and compete,” said Norrie. “It’s obviously nice to be through. But I’m most proud I’m just enjoying match for match. It just feels kind of like when I obviously made that run there, the weather was unbelievable that year, so sunny. It was so much fun that year. It feels a little bit like that right now. It feels very normal. But still a long way to go obviously. Nothing to get too carried away with.”

The 29-year-old could become only the third British man in more than 50 years – after Tim Henman and Sir Andy Murray – to reach two Wimbledon quarter-finals.

“The beginning of this year I was struggling a little bit with expectations, wanting to play well and wanting to win and wanting to do well, not really taking care of the fundamentals so much,” he said. “I’ve come to enjoy this tournament. I want to keep doing that and keep giving people, my friends, my family, my team, something to cheer about. As a kid you dream about playing here at Wimbledon. If I would have seen myself here playing and competing, I would have been super proud.”

Big-serving world No 143 Jarry is aiming to reach the maiden major quarter-final of his career. After coming through qualifying in Roehampton, he fought back from two sets down to knock out eighth seed Holger Rune in the first round and then dispatched American Learner Tien and Brazilian teenage sensation Joao Fonseca. The 6ft 6in won his only previous tour level meeting with Norrie, a straight-sets success at the 2018 Miami Open.

“It’s a great match to play, I’m excited for it,” said Norrie. “I think he’s one of the most dangerous players on the tour when he’s confident, and he is confident. He beat Holger in a crazy match. I think he looks like a guy with nothing to lose. He’s so dangerous. He’s got one of the best serves on tour. I think he likes the grass a lot. I’m going to have to really raise my level from how I played [in round three].”
