Jameis Winston couldn’t save the New Orleans Saints in life after Drew Brees, and he isn’t expected to be the savior for the New York Giants, either. But the veteran quarterback could give the Saints something they’re missing. The Giants loaded up at QB this offseason by signing Winston and Russell Wilson as free agents while trading up to draft Jaxson Dart at No. 25 overall in the 2025 NFL draft.
As for the Saints? They said their goodbyes to Derek Carr and drafted Tyler Shough at No. 40 to compete with a couple of other inexperienced quarterbacks in Spencer Rattler, who went winless in six starts last year, and Jake Haener, who has started just once going into Year 3 as a pro. The Saints pulled him at halftime.
And their teammates see the need for an experienced hand in the room. When asked which veteran quarterback he would want the Saints to acquire, Cameron Jordan told Kay Adams he’d run it back with Winston without hesitation.
“There’s Russ over there. They’ve got Jaxson Dart. My guy, Jameis, like, come on down. It makes a lot of sense,” Jordan said. “I’m going all in Jameis as a veteran quarterback. Come on over.”
“Im goin’ all in, Jameis as a veteran QB .. come on over.”

Outside of a 5-2 streak with Sean Payton on the headset back in 2021, Winston went 1-2 as the Saints’ starting quarterback before posting a 2-5 record with the Cleveland Browns last year. But he was popular in the locker room and he worked hard to cultivate a following among Saints fans. And if it were up to Jordan, he’d go with Winston over someone like Kirk Cousins, though not necessarily for football reasons; Cousins has the Atlanta Falcons‘ stink all over him.
But all indications are on the Saints riding it out with their young guns. They have multiple former NFL quarterbacks on the coaching staff between head coach Kellen Moore, offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, and QB coach Scott Tolzien, and they feel like that’s enough. Time will tell if another option gets added to the room, but at this stage, it looks like Winston is focused on securing a roster spot with New York, and Jordan is focused on finishing his Saints career on a high note.
