Calvary, North DeSoto among LHSAA softball teams advancing to quarterfinals

Playing in the middle of the afternoon on perhaps the hottest day of the year thus far, the Calvary softball machine was undeterred in smashing three home runs in support of pitcher Kynzee Anderson.

The three-time defending state champions rolled into the quarterfinals of the LHSAA’ s Select Division III with a 16-1 three-inning victory over Fisher (9-12). After starting the game in an 0-1 hole, the Lady Cavs (34-1) wasted little time erasing the deficit.

Super sophomore Loren Sivils left the biggest mark on the opponents with a grand slam that was lofted well over the Cavs’ dressing rooms outside the centerfield fence. The 5-foot-10 slugger has shown a lot of power throughout the season.

“I thought it was a good moment today. My previous at-bat I had popped up, so I went in thinking ‘I’m gonna square this ball up and do something good with it,’” Sivils said. “It was a good moment to do it. I saw the bases were loaded and I was like ‘no pressure,’ just base hit and it turned into a grand slam.”

Just a few moments later, shortstop Baylor Bockhaus crushed an offering even deeper than Sivils’ with two aboard and the Cavs were off and running. Anderson added a solo shot in the third to give Calvary a trifecta of homers.

“It’s been a week since we played our last game, so to get the playoff jitters out in the first inning when they came out fired up was good,” Calvary coach Tiffany Wood said. “Offensively, we knew we’d come back and get that run. Then we were able to shut them down. We stayed on a roll offensively.”

North DeSoto's Avery McCloskey pitched a shutout in an LHSAA playoff win versus Rayne on Monday.

North DeSoto 11, Rayne 0: Sasha Falls blasted two home runs with four RBIs on a 3-for-4 day to lead the LHSAA Non-Select Division II defending state champions into the quarterfinals.

Avery McCloskey collected a pair of hits and posted three RBIs while pitching a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Maddy Stringer was 3-for-3 on the day and Carsyn Curtis added two hits for the Lady Griffins (29-3).
