Seattle Mariners star catcher Cal Raleigh announced Friday that he will participate in the Midsummer Classic Home Run Derby. The Mariners’ backstop currently leads all of Major League Baseball with 32 homers this season.

The Home Run Derby is scheduled for July 14 in Atlanta at Truist Park. Ronald Acuna Jr., who is coming off a torn ACL and has hit nine homers this season, is also participating.

Along with Raleigh, it was noted that his father, Todd Raleigh, will serve as Raleigh’s thrower during the derby. Raleigh also mentioned that he hopes his younger brother, Todd Jr., can join as his catcher.

Since 1985, no catcher has ever won the event. Raleigh, a switch-hitting catcher, is the eighth Mariners player to participate, with Julio Rodriguez being the most recent in 2022. The last Mariners player to win the derby was in 1999 when Ken Griffey Jr. did it at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

While there is no pressure for Raleigh to win, it’s worth noting that he has exceptional power and may be an early favorite. Overall, it promises to be an exciting weekend for this catching star.
