Caitlin Clark Nowhere in Sight as Boyfriend Enjoys Special Family Moment originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Penn Quakers men’s basketball coach and Philadelphia native Fran McCaffery threw out the opening pitch for Sunday’s Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds game.
Fran McCaffery took part in the moment alongside his son, Connor McCaffery, who was seen without his girlfriend, Indiana Fever All-Star guard Caitlin Clark. Clark’s absence surprised some fans because the couple has a strong relationship.
They are former basketball players for the Iowa Hawkeyes, where Fran McCaffery coached the men’s team from 2010-25. Clark took women’s basketball by storm as she led Iowa’s women’s team to consecutive national championship games in 2023 and 2024.
Meanwhile, Connor McCaffery was a guard on the men’s team from 2017-23 under his father’s leadership. As a senior, he averaged 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.3 steals in 32 appearances.
His dad, Fran McCaffery, helped Iowa capture the Big Ten Tournament championship in 2022 and make that season’s NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, Clark not being in attendance for his moment might have happened because of the ongoing WNBA regular season.
Clark is rehabbing from a groin injury that has sidelined her for the past five games. She is working on making her return to the Fever’s starting lineup after being named a team captain for the upcoming WNBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis on July 19.
Clark has averaged 18.2 points, 5.0 rebounds. 8.9 assists and 1.6 steals in nine games. The Fever have a 9-9 record heading into their next game on Wednesday against the Golden State Valkyries at noon ET.
