BYU Lands Four-Star Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year Jax Tanner originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
BYU continued their recruiting hot streak on Saturday. The Cougars landed four-star offensive lineman Jax Tanner. The Rocky Mountain HS product from Meridian, Idaho held many Power Four offers from Oregon, Tennessee, Penn State, Auburn, Michigan, and others. He chose BYU with a few big-time programs gaining steam in the past few weeks.
Tanner comes to Provo as a legacy recruit. His father, Mike Tanner, played at BYU from 2000-2003. Also, his brother, Gage, committed to BYU in the 2023 class and is expected to join the program this fall following his LDS mission.
At 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds, Tanner earned Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year honors in 2024. He’s one of the best offensive line prospects in the western region of the county. He racked up 115 pancake blocks while surrendering no sacks. Rocky Mountain reached the Class 6A semifinals as the Grizzlies averaged 11.3 yards per pass. Tanner put on a show at the Under Armour Next Camp in Utah, where he showed more athleticism than anticipated and more length as well.
“Has the length, feet and balance to play some tackle at the college level but frame wise, his upside is probably highest at guard or even center,” 247Sports’ Greg Biggins wrote about Tanner.
“He’s nasty on film with a mean streak and one of the more aggressive players in the region. A powerful run blocker, fluid in how he moves and shows good lateral mobility. More than just a mauler, he’s sound in his technique, always looks on balance, stays square and doesn’t get beat with speed around the edge. Strong on combo blocks and has the feet to recover and pick up twists and stunts. Can ride edge rushers out of the pocket and is strong at the point of attack. The ceiling is high with Tanner and we see him as a multi-year starter at the Power 4 level and a player with an NFL ceiling as well.”
Tanner is the second four-star offensive lineman in the 2026 class, joining Bott Mulitalo near the top and under five-star QB Ryder Lyons. He’s the 20th recruit for BYU going into next year.
Tanner has said he plans to serve a mission after finishing high school, meaning he is expected to join the program in 2028.
