The Milwaukee Brewers have reportedly reunited with Shelby Miller.
In a deal initially reported by Fansided’s Robert Murray that appears to have come in just under the wire, the right-handed reliever is being sent to Milwaukee by Arizona along with left-hander Jordan Montgomery.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that the Brewers are sending the Diamondbacks a player to be named later or cash in exchange for the pair.
Miller, 34, is 3-3 with a 1.98 ERA, WHIP of 0.96 and 40 strikeouts in 36 ⅓ innings over 37 appearances. He’s also saved 10 games.
He last pitched on July 5, however, after being sidelined with a elbow injury, although recent reports indicated he was nearing a return to pitching.
When that might be – Miller is yet to take the mound in any minor-league rehab appearances – remains to be seen.
Assuming he joins the Brewers at some point, Miller will begin what will actually be his third tenure with the organization.
He signed a free-agent deal in 2019 and made eight minor-league appearances before being shut down and then reunited with Milwaukee on a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training in 2020 before ultimately opting out for the Covid-19 pandemic.
Miller has pitched in the major leagues with nine different teams, including 46 appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023 and 51 with the Detroit Tigers in 2024.
The 2009 first-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals is a fly-ball pitcher, but has exhibited elite swing-and-miss traits and consistently generated weak contact this season with the Diamondbacks.
As for the 32-year-old Montgomery, his acquisition is something of a wild card in that he’s out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery this spring and will be a free agent this winter.
Another report said the Brewers will send $2 million to the Diamondbacks for Montgomery, which would indicate the deal is serving as a partial salary dump.
He’s being paid $22.5 million this season.
This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
