The Boston Red Sox are keeping a close eye on top prospect Roman Anthony as the season develops. The No.2 overall prospect in baseball has spent his entire 2025 with Triple-A Worcester, and on Friday, he was removed from Worcester’s lineup after fouling a ball off the top of his foot.
Anthony is tearing it up this season for Boston’s top affiliate, and it is only a matter of time before he gets called up to the big league club. He is hitting .313 this season with five home runs, and as many walks as strikeouts (21).
Forced to leave the game in apparent pain, WooSox manager Chad Tracy provided a positive update following the game about Anthony’s injury.
Transcribed by Red Sox reporter Rob Bradford, here is what he had to say:
“I think he’s okay,” said Tracy. “Obviously, they are going to check him out. He fouled that ball off the top of his foot and kept going. In the middle of the game it was stiffening up on him. We made the decision to precautionarily get him out there. They have to take a look. I think he’s day-to-day. He will be okay but they have to obviously look at him and see.”
For most of the season, Anthony has been primarily a Designated Hitter due to a slight shoulder problem, but had just recently returned to his outfield duties.
If he has to be sidelined for any period, that will hurt his chances of being called up sooner rather than later. However, Boston wants to ensure the safety and health of its top prospect before making any roster decision on him.
