After parts of two seasons with the Texas Rangers, pitcher Max Scherzer signed a one-year deal worth $15 million to join the Toronto Blue Jays in the offseason. While his best days are behind him, Scherzer provides a lot of value to the Blue Jays, especially since he is less than two years removed from helping the Rangers win their first-ever World Series.

Unfortunately for Toronto, Scherzer suffered a thumb injury in his first start with the team and has been out of action since March 29. However, it was recently announced that he is scheduled to throw 60-65 pitches in AAA on Friday as the next step in his recovery (h/t Keegan Matheson of MLB.com).

Ahead of the Blue Jays’ game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, manager John Schneider sent a message regarding the 40-year-old following this announcement.

Despite Scherzer’s absence, the Blue Jays have mostly been solid this season. They are 38-30 and are just 4.5 games behind the New York Yankees for the AL East lead. Still, their pitching has been up-and-down all season, and they would likely benefit from Scherzer’s return.

Schneider spoke ahead of the St. Louis native’s rehab start and sent a very clear message: “I couldn’t care less about his line score.”

In his only start of the season, Scherzer gave up two earned runs and allowed three hits in three innings in a 9-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Additionally, he recorded one strikeout.

The Blue Jays are sitting comfortably in the AL East picture, but there is still a lot of baseball left. As they look to remain near the top of the division, they will need to remain as hot as possible from here on out. Fortunately for Toronto, it sounds like they could get Scherzer back on the mound soon, which should give them a major boost.
