The New Orleans Saints may not be done adding new players to the team before the opening day of training camp on July 23. Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski lists the Saints as one of the top contenders to sign cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., one of best remaining free agents on the market.
Samuel, 25, has played his entire four-year career with the Los Angeles Chargers. Twice an All-ACC selection in college with the Florida State Seminoles, Samuel was drafted in Round 2 with the 47th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Chargers. He was the seventh corner selected in that year’s draft. Samuel started 44 of 51 possible games over his first three seasons. He intercepted 6 passes, broke up 35 throws, and allowed less than 59% completion percentage when targeted over that span.
A major reason that Samuel remains unsigned are injury concerns. He was limited to just four games last year because of a shoulder injury. In April, Samuel underwent neck surgery for issues he said he’s been dealing with all his life. Samuel will reportedly undergo a physical early this month, which should reveal when he can return to football. At that point, he’s likely to have teams lining up to sign him.
Samuel met with the Saints back in May. The pairing would make sense. Brandon Staley is the new defensive coordinator for New Orleans and has a system that fits Samuel’s off-ball talents as a corner. Staley was also the head coach of the Chargers when they drafted Samuel back in 2021 and remained his coach for the first three years of his career. The Saints have second-year talent Kool-Aid McKinstry at one corner, but major questions throughout the rest of the position after losing Marshon Lattimore (trade) and Paulson Adebo (free agency) since last November. Louisville cornerback Quincy Riley was added with a Round 4 draft choice and the Saints re-signed Isaac Yiadom to join versatile talent Alontae Taylor, who is at his best when used in the slot or around the formation.
Asante Samuel Jr. would greatly boost the New Orleans secondary. The Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals are also listed as potential suitors for Samuel pending his physical. Other corners New Orleans may consider if not able to sign Samuel could be Mike Hilton or Rasul Douglas. However, a healthy Asante Samuel Jr. would provide the best upgrade for Brandon Staley’s defensive backfield.
