The New York Jets‘ best players were both selected during the 2022 NFL draft. New general manager Darren Mougey inherited a roster with two building blocks. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson and cornerback Sauce Gardner are who Mougey intends to build this roster around.
On offense, Wilson has been the definition of consistency despite consistently bad poor quarterback play. Wilson has recorded three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. In 2024, the former Ohio State standout posted a career-high 1,104 yards.
Bleacher Report recently conducted an experiment to name every team’s most promising building block. For the Jets, that’s a difficult choice between Gardner and Wilson. B/R ultimately went with Wilson.
“Despite the Jets’ unstable quarterback situation, Wilson racked up 1,042-plus receiving yards in each of his three seasons, catching passes from Zach Wilson, Mike White, Joe Flacco, Chris Streveler, Trevor Siemian, Tim Boyle, Tyrod Taylor and Aaron Rodgers,” Moe Moton acknowledged. “Wilson will reunite with his former Ohio State teammate, Justin Fields, who signed a two-year deal with the Jets. If they can rekindle chemistry from their collegiate years, Wilson could post receiving numbers that are indicative of his true production ceiling.”
The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt believes Wilson could set franchise records in targets and receptions this year.
The Jets are fortunate to have Wilson. They’re even more fortunate to have him on his team-friendly rookie contract. Mougey should make signing Wilson to a lucrative long-term extension a priority before the regular season begins.
