Jul. 24—EAST GRAND FORKS — Two games into the Substate 12 Tournament, the Bemidji American Legion baseball team is poised to make another deep run.
The Centaurs defeated Detroit Lakes 10-0 in six innings on Wednesday before dispatching East Grand Forks 5-2 on Thursday. Bemidji advanced to the semifinal round in the double-elimination tournament and will play top-seeded Alexandria at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in East Grand Forks.
Lawson Berg went 2 for 4 against seventh-seeded Detroit Lakes to pace the Post 14 hitters. Fisher Ganske, Gunner Ganske, Jack Lundquist, Peyton Neadeau, Reece Dokken and Max Bahr each had one hit in the mercy-rule win.
Against third-seeded East Grand Forks, the No. 2 Centaurs fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning. However, Neadeau drove in a pair of runs with a single to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning.
Bemidji took a 3-2 lead on Stonewall Gessner’s RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lundquist and Neadeau each singled in another run in the bottom of the fifth.
Bahr threw five innings to pick up the win on the mound. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Gunner Ganske locked up a six-out save, striking out five of the 10 batters he faced.
