May 29—SAUK CENTRE — After the first day of the Section 8-3A Tournament on Wednesday in Sauk Centre, Bemidji High School freshman Beckett Grand was on the outside looking into the top 10.
That didn’t stop Grand from locking up one of the six individual state bids on Thursday.
Grand followed up his first-round score of 76 with a one-under-par round of 71 at Greystone Golf Club to finish seventh with a total of 147.
The top team advances to the state tournament, along with the top six individuals who are not on the top team.
Alexandria won the Section 8-3A title with a score of 577, shooting one-under par as a team. Brainerd (583), Sartell (605), Buffalo (607), Bemidji (612) and Moorhead (632) followed.
Brainerd’s Aidan Dubois won the individual section championship with a five-under-par 137. Willamr’s Aden Jacobson (140), Buffalo’s Harvey Ylitalo (145) and Russell Ylitalo (149), Brainerd’s Brady Oseland (145) joined Grand among the state qualifiers. Three
Jackson Fogelson was two shots shy of earning a tiebreaker for the final spot at state with a 151. Weston Seitz finished his final high school tournament with a 153. Axel Burlingame (161, 32nd), Graham Fish (166, 41st) and Logan Brink (172, 47th) rounded out the field for BHS.
The state tournament will be held at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids June 10-11.
