According to Jijantes, Barcelona are working to renew Frenkie De Jong’s contract before the end of June, with the club aiming to finalise the agreement by the end of this week.

Not only would the extension secure a key player for the future, but it would also help generate more Financial Fair Play margin, easing the club’s ongoing salary concerns.

Barcelona have been trying to reach a new agreement with De Jong for several months now. The midfielder, whose current deal expires in 2026, has been one of the highest earners in the squad.

The club’s goal has always been to retain him while adjusting his salary to better fit the current wage structure. It now appears that both sides are finally close to reaching a mutual agreement.

As such, his renewal would come as a massive sigh of relief for the club in their attempt to generate more room within the Financial Fair Play. Since his wages would be adjusted, Barcelona would gain more margin in the salary space.

A strong end to the season

De Jong finished the 2024/25 season on a high, showing clear signs that he had overcome the ankle issues that had plagued him physically and mentally over the past year.

Under Hansi Flick, the Dutchman was given a leading role in the midfield and was trusted in some of the club’s most important matches. His sharpness and confidence on the pitch reflected a player fully recovered and eager to lead.

Flick’s trust has played a big part in rebuilding De Jong’s belief in himself, and his recent performances have reminded fans and the club of his undeniable quality and importance to the squad.

Deco confirms contract talks

Speaking recently, sporting director Deco confirmed that the club is pleased with De Jong’s development and that renewal talks are progressing well.

“The Frenkie we had this season is the Frenkie we want. We want to continue with Frenkie. He has one more year on his contract, and we’re going to analyse things calmly,” Deco said.

As things stand, there are no major obstacles remaining. If everything goes according to plan, Barcelona could officially announce De Jong’s renewal in the coming days, securing a player who is now fully trusted by Flick and once again seen as central to the club’s long-term plans.
